Pivoting Expertise: Teach the Meta-Skill Business Building Itself
One of the most important realizations in my own business journey was discovering that the skills I developed while scaling my dating advice company — the marketing systems, product creation process, team building, and launch strategies — were far more valuable than the original content I was selling. The business building skills were the meta-skill. This is a pattern I see consistently: experts develop deep domain knowledge in one field, and in the process of commercializing it, they develop an even more rare and valuable set of entrepreneurial skills. When that happens, you have a choice. You can keep teaching the original subject, or you can recognize that your real breakthrough knowledge is about how you built the business itself. Often the pivot is worth making — because very few people can teach both what they know and how they turned it into a scalable enterprise.
